Transforming Memory Care

Through education, collaboration, and support

After my husband’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the DCC support group helped me cope with my new responsibilities and accept the uncertainty of what’s to come."

-Janet Hookailo, care partner

About the Dementia Care Collaborative

The Dementia Care Collaborative was created to educate and support patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the community. Dedicated team members offer opportunities for learning and connecting across the hospital and into the community at large. We are here to teach new ways of understanding dementia, how to best communicate and partner with those with dementia and offer support and guidance for caregivers to feel empowered to foster their own wellbeing and resilience.

The Dementia Care Collaborative is part of the MGH Division of Palliative Care & Geriatric Medicine and is an umbrella for the Dementia Caregiver Support Program and the Memory Care Program.

The Dementia Care Collaborative has been funded by the generosity of supporting individuals and foundations including the Jack Satter Foundation and The Bresky Foundation since its inception in 2017. Please give today to support our mission to transform memory care.

Advance Care Planning for Dementia: Understanding Your Options

May 2024 Conversations With Caregivers

In this presentation, we will explore the critical importance of advance care planning, particularly using the Dementia Values & Priorities Tool offered by Compassion & Choices. This tool empowers individuals to articulate their care preferences clearly, ensuring that their values and wishes are respected even when they can no longer communicate them. By joining us, you will gain valuable insights into how proactive planning can provide peace of mind and clarity for you and your loved ones, bridging the gap between your wishes and the care you receive. Join us to learn how you can take control of your future healthcare decisions with dignity, compassion, and informed choice.

Kim Callinan is the President and CEO of Compassion & Choices. During her tenure she has played a leadership role in beginning to foster a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive movement, launching the Finish Strong initiative and authorizing and implementing medical aid in dying in six new jurisdictions. Kim is frequently invited to speak at conferences, testify before state legislatures, conduct policy briefings, and serve on committees as an expert on end-of-life care options.

Join us Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 5:30 – 7:00pm EST via Zoom.

Restore Your Life Course

May 2024 Health and Resiliency

The 8 stages of human development provide a pathway toward positive and healthy living.  The stress of providing care for a family member with dementia can at times seem to shatter previous gains, challenge a person’s sense of life progress, and result in feelings of entrapment and stagnation.  In this workshop, you will review the 8 stages of development, identify the stages you have achieved, and explore how caregiving impacts your life course.  Through reflection, journaling, and group discussion, you will identify ways you can reclaim gains and enhance your sense of personal agency while caregiving.

Dr. Felipe Jain, MD, is a psychiatrist and Director of Healthy Aging Studies at the Depression Clinical and Research Program of the Massachusetts General Hospital.  Dr. Jain has dedicated more than a decade to research to support family caregivers and care partners of people living with dementia.  Dr. Jain was the first to use brain imaging to identify the underpinnings of caregiver grief and to show how a therapy that improved caregiver depression strengthened brain connectivity.

Join us Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 5:30 – 6:30pm EST.
